1. По зелёной по долине шли послушник и монах.
Оба — с тайною молитвой, оба — с чётками в руках.
Видят, как стоит у ручья девица, красотою может ослепить,
Длинный сарафан намочить боится — в воду не решается ступить.
2. Тут монах, не размышляя, вырастает перед ней,
Осторожно поднимает и несёт через ручей.
Ну, а дальше — каждый своей дорогой, монастырь уже недалеко.
И молитва вновь устремилась к Богу, закрутились чётки под рукой.
3. Так шагали черноризцы, лишь дыханья слыша звук,
И у врат у монастырских говорит послушник вдруг:
— Нет, ты, брат, скажи, чтоб не быть соблазну, как коснуться женщины ты мог?
Разве ты обет свой давал напрасно, как теперь на это смотрит Бог?
4. И монах, глаза прищурив, улыбнулся, глядя вдаль:
-Ты поднял в стакане бурю, — он послушнику сказал, —
Помыслы твои все Господь читает, так что, обрати к себе свой взор
Я её давно у ручья оставил, ты — несёшь с собою до сих пор.

1. A novice and a monk walked along the green valley.
Both - with a secret prayer, both - with a rosary in their hands.
They see how a girl stands by the stream, her beauty can blind,
He is afraid to get wet in a long sundress - he does not dare to step into the water.
2. Here the monk, without thinking, rises in front of her,
Carefully picks up and carries across the stream.
Well, and then - each in his own way, the monastery is not far away.
And the prayer again rushed to God, the rosary spun at hand.
3. So the Chernorizians walked, only hearing the sound of their breath,
And at the monastery gate, the novice suddenly says:
- No, you, brother, tell me, so as not to be tempted, how could you touch a woman?
Did you make your vow in vain, as God looks at it now?
4. And the monk, screwing up his eyes, smiled, looking into the distance:
- You raised a storm in a glass, - he said to the novice, -
The Lord reads all your thoughts, so turn your gaze to yourself
I left it by the stream a long time ago, you still carry it with you.
