Он стоял на средине моста,
И решимость в глазах его зрела,
И была не страшна высота —

И порвать с этой жизнью никчёмной.
Он на воду смотрел с высоты,
И невольно сутулились плечи…
Он сжигал на мосту все мосты,
Как послышалось вдруг: «Добрый вечер».
От внезапности вздрогнув такой,
Обернулся он в то же мгновенье:
Незнакомец стоял за спиной
И просил его дать ему денег.
Растерявшись, с готовностью стал
Он карманы ощупывать тут же,
И, найдя свой бумажник, отдал —
Ведь теперь он ему был не нужен.
Только тот начал вдруг не без слёз
Говорить о каких-то сиротках
И просить, чтоб он деньги отнёс,
Здесь, поблизости, через дорогу.
И готовый минуту назад
С этой жизнью навеки проститься,
Он, поймав умоляющий взгляд,
Сам не понял, как вдруг согласился.
Он, конечно, вернётся потом,
Но сперва отнесёт эти деньги
Тем, кому за последней чертой
Это будет, быть может, спасеньем.
Шёл с моста он, не чувствуя ног,
Стала влажной ладонь отчего-то,
Что сжимала газетный клочок,
На котором был адрес сироток.
И чем дальше он был от моста,
Тем прямей становился как будто…
Он уже не вернётся сюда,
Потому что он нужен кому-то.
