Am Berg ist der eine des anderen Teil
Zwei Brüder, der eine des and’ren Hand
Und unten im Lager steh’n stumm vor den Zelten
Ratlos die Gefährten und starren gebannt
Zu den zwei winz’gen Punkten in den eisigen Welten
Und die Ferngläser fliegen von Hand zu Hand
Hatten sie nicht gestern gemeinsam beschlossen
Mit dem Aufstieg zu warten, wenn der Himmel aufreißt?
Doch wer hat die rote Leuchtkugel verschossen
Die den beiden dort oben Schlechtwetter verheißt?
Da war das verabredete Lichtsignal
Das ankündigt, daß das Wetter umschlägt!
Gleißend, feuerrot schießt es auf aus dem Tal —
Alles Für alles Wider ist längst abgewägt
Also müssen sie heut noch den Gipfel erreichen
Durch beißende Kälte, durch bitterste Qual
Jetzt warten, das hieße die Fahne streichen
Absteigen und scheitern, bleibt da eine Wahl?
Mit keuchendem Atem, die Glieder wie Blei
Höhenkrank, wie im Wahn: Nur noch ein Gletscherfeld
Noch ein Eisüberhang, ein letzter Grat und die zwei
Fall’n sich stumm in den Arm auf dem Dach der Welt!
Zu Tode erschöpft, den Gipfel bezwungen!
Stille, Zeitlupe, Rückblende: Zwei kleine Jungen
Zieh’n die Handschuhe aus, geben sich die Hand
Wie als Kinder, wie nach ihrer ersten Wand
Ein Handschuh fällt auf das ewige Eis
Sie türmen Steine darauf: Der bleibt hier als Beweis!
So krönt ein Steinmann ihr Lebenswerk
Auf dem Nanga Parbat, dem Nackten Berg!
Das Abendrot am Firmament verrät
Eine sternklare Nacht, schnell bricht sie herein
Es ist spät für den Abstieg — ist es zu spät?
Eh es dunkel wird müssen sie weit tiefer sein!
Auf dem Aufstiegsweg zurück?
Kein Gedanke!
Zu schwer für die Erschöpften, unbegehbar bei Nacht
Es bleibt nur die Flucht durch die Diamirflanke
Und die Hoffnung, daß sie nach Westen abflacht
Die Angst kommt und lähmende Lethargie
Das Verhängnis wird ihnen Schritt für Schritt klar
Ausgehungert und ausgedörrt irren sie
In die Ungewißheit, in die sich’re Gefahr
Jetzt gilt nur, sich irgendwie abwärts zu tasten
Der einzige Ausweg ist der Weg voraus
In der feindlichen Höhe nicht ausruh’n, nicht rasten
Nur noch irgendwie aus der Todeszone heraus!
Oder einfach nur in die Dunkelheit fallen
Und liegen bleiben, sich einfach nicht rühr'n
Der Atem sinkt nieder in Eiskristallen
In Wimpern und Brau’n, nur die Kälte nicht spür'n!
Da steigen zwei auf in die steinerne Wand
Und einer kehrt heim, hat die Füße erfror’n
Vom Schnee blind die Augen, das Gesicht ist verbrannt
Hat in der Lawine den Bruder verlor’n
Zwei haben den Gipfel der Gipfel erklommen
Den höchsten Triumph und die höchste Qual
Nur einer alleine ist wiedergekommen
Verzweifelt, gebrochen im tiefsten Tal
Da kommt einer heim aus der steinernen Wand
Ein Schatten nur von jenem anderen Teil
Der im Dunkel im ewigen Eis verschwand

There two climb up into the stone wall
