Ein dichter Nebel senkte sich auf die große, fremde Stadt
Ein langer Arbeitstag lag hinter mir, ich war abgespannt und matt

Gegen Mitternacht ging noch ein Zug

Einem Prunkbau aus längst vergangener Zeit, Drängeln, Suchen und Schieben

Ich sah die Reisenden, die Wartenden und die Gestrandeten der Nacht
So viel Gleichgültigkeit
So viel Jammer und Leid
Unter so viel kalter Pracht
Ich trat auf den offenen Bahnsteig hinaus, die naßkalte Luft hielt mich wach
Ich fröstelte, schlug meinen Kragen hoch und sah meinem Atem nach
Aus der Dunkelheit schwebten überm Gleis drei Lichter, mein Zug fuhr ein
Eine Wagentür schlug
Es war warm in dem Zug
Und ich war im Abteil ganz allein
Lautlos fuhren wir an, und die Lichter der Stadt versanken in milchigem Brei
Und immer schneller flogen erleuchtete Fenster und Vorstadtbahnhöfe vorbei
Noch ein Bahnübergang, ein paar Scheinwerfer, und die Welt da draußen verschwand
Mein Abteillicht fiel in weiß
Auf den Schotter am Gleis
Und ich ahnte das dunkle Land
Und durch die Dunkelheit drang
Der monotone Klang
Der Räder auf dem Schienenstrang
Ein einsamer Gesang
Den stählernen Weg entlang
Vorn an der Trasse standen sie, die Haut wettergegerbt
Mit ihren Spaten hatten sie Adern ins Land gekerbt
Mit Hacken und mit Hämmern hatten sie Berge bewegt
Und Schwellen über Schotter und darauf Schienen gelegt
In bittrem Frost, sengender Glut, in Regen, Tag für Tag
Nachts einen Strohsack auf dem Boden im Bretterverschlag
Und wieder auf beim Morgengrau’n für jämmerlichen Lohn
Und noch ein neues Vermögen mehr für den Stahlbaron
Und bald fauchte das Dampfroß funkensprühend durch das Land
Manch neue Industrie und manch Imperium entstand
Manch unschätzbarer Reichtum, doch an jedem Meter Gleis
Jeder Brücke, jedem Tunnel klebten Tränen, Blut und Schweiß
Die Eisenbahn trug Fortschritt, technische Revolution
In jedem Winkel, bis in die entlegenste Station
Trug Güter von den Seehäfen bis an den Alpenrand
Verband Menschen und Städte und trug Wohlstand in das Land
Doch der großen Erfindung haftet stets die Tragik an
Daß sie dem Frieden, aber auch dem Kriege dienen kann
Endlose Rüstungszüge rollten bald schon Tag und Nacht:
Kriegsgerät und Kanonen war’n die vordringliche Fracht
Schon drängte sich auf Bahnhöfen siegesgewiß das Heer
Den Jubel auf den Lippen und mit Blumen am Gewehr
In fahnen- und siegesparol’n behangene Waggons
Nach Lemberg oder Lüttich, nach Krakau oder Mons
Im Trommelfeuer von Verdun erstarb der Siegeswahn
Aus Zügen wurden Lazaretts, und diesmal sah die Bahn
Den Rückzug der Geschlagenen und — den Kriegsherren zum Hohn —
Im Waggon im Wald von Compiègne, die Kapitulation
Millionen Tote auf den Schlachtfeldern, sinnloses Leid
Wer heimkehrte, fand Elend, Not und Arbeitslosigkeit
Doch auf dem Boden des Zusammenbruchs gediehen schon
Die Schieber und die Kriegsgewinnler, die Spekulation
Aber es sproß auch aus den Wirr’n verstrickter Politik
Der zarte, schutzbedürft'ge Halm der ersten Republik
Doch Kleingeist, Dummheit und Gewalt zertrampelten ihn gleich
Mit Nagelstiefeln auf dem Weg ins Tausendjähr'ge Reich
Die Unmenschen regierten, und die Welt sah zu und schwieg
Und wieder hieß es: «Räder müssen rollen für den Sieg!»
Und es begann das dunkelste Kapitel der Nation
Das dunkelste des Flügelrades: Die Deportation
In Güterwaggons eingeschlossen, eingepfercht wie Vieh
Verhungert und verzweifelt, nackt und frierend standen sie
Hilflose Frau’n und Männer, Greise und Kinder sogar
Auf der bittren Reise, deren Ziel das Todeslager war
Dann aber brach der Zorn der Gedemütigten herein
Kein Dorf blieb da verschont, da blieb kein Stein auf einem Stein
Und Bomben fielen, bis das ganze Land in Flammen stand
Die Städte ausradiert war’n und der Erdboden verbrannt
Der Krieg war mörderischer als jemals ein Krieg zuvor
Und schwer gestraft das Volk, das ihn frevelnd heraufbeschwor
In Trümmern und Ruinen strichen sie hungernd umher
Die Überlebenden, die Ausgebombten, nichts ging mehr
Und immer längere Flüchtlingstrecks kamen Tag für Tag
Und irrten durch ein Land, das unter Schutt und Asche lag
Der Überlebenswille zwang sie, nicht zu resignier’n
Die Aussichtslosigkeit, das Unmögliche zu probier’n:
Noch aufzuspringen, wenn irgendwo ein Hamsterzug ging
Wenn an den Waggontür'n schon eine Menschentraube hing
Ein Platz auf einem Puffer, einem Trittbrett bestenfalls
Mit Hoffnung auf ein bißchen Mehl, Kartoffeln oder Schmalz
Was auf dem Bahndamm lag, wurde von Kindern aufgeklaubt
Und manch ehrlicher Mann hat manchen Kohlenzug beraubt
Und dann kamen die Züge mit den Heimkehrern besetzt
Verwundet und zerschunden, abgerissen, abgewetzt
Wie viele Dramen spielten sich auf den Bahnsteigen ab!
Suchen und Freudentränen, wo’s ein Wiedersehen gab
Warten, Hoffen und Fragen, wird er diesmal dabei sein?
Viele kamen vergebens, und viele gingen allein
Zerschoss’ne Loks und Wagen wurden recht und schlecht geflickt
Und auf ein abenteuerliches Schienennetz geschickt
Und der Puls begann zu schlagen, und aus dem Nichts entstand
Mit Hoffnungen und Träumen beladen, ein neues Land
Und durch das Morgengrau’n drang

Den stählernen Weg entlang
Das Rattern der Räder über eine Weiche rief mich in die Gegenwart
Übernächtigt war ich aufgewacht, ich war fast am Ziel meiner Fahrt

Und im leeren Raum
Zwischen Wachen und Traum

Sah die Menschen auf dem Weg zur Arbeit auf den Vorstadtbahnhöfen steh’n
Sah die Scheinwerfer der Autos vor den Schranken am Bahnübergang
Und eine Hoffnung lag
Über dem neuen Tag
Und in dem Sonnenaufgang

A dense fog descended on the large, strange city
A long day's work lay behind me, I was exhausted and exhausted
Too tired for the freeway, too late for the last flight
But I wanted to go home
And that's when I found out
Around midnight there was another train
There was still some time, I didn't know where to go, so I stood around at the train station:
A magnificent building from a bygone era, pushing, searching and pushing

So much misery and suffering
Beneath so much cold glory
I stepped out onto the open platform, the damp, cold air keeping me awake
I shivered, turned up my collar and watched my breath

It was warm on the train
And I was all alone in the compartment
We drove away silently, and the city lights sank into a milky mush
And lighted windows and suburban train stations flew by faster and faster
Another level crossing, a few headlights, and the world outside was gone
My compartment light fell in white
On the gravel at the track
And I sensed the dark land
And penetrated through the darkness
The monotonous sound
The wheels on the track
A lonely song
Along the steel path
They stood at the front of the track, their skin weather-beaten
They had notched veins in the land with their spades
They had moved mountains with pickaxes and hammers
And sleepers laid over gravel and rails on them
In bitter frost, scorching embers, in rain, day after day
A straw mattress on the floor in the wooden shack at night
And up again at dawn for a miserable reward
And another new fortune for the Steel Baron
And soon the steam steed was hissing through the land, spraying sparks
Many a new industry and empire arose
Some priceless wealth, but on every meter of track
Tears, blood and sweat stuck to every bridge and tunnel
The railroad carried progress, technical revolution
In every corner, down to the most remote station
Carried goods from the seaports to the edge of the Alps
Connected people and cities and brought prosperity to the land
But the tragedy is always attached to the great invention
That it can serve peace, but also war
Endless trains of armor were soon rolling day and night:
War equipment and cannons were the priority cargo
The army was already thronging at the railway stations, confident of victory
The cheers on the lips and with flowers on the gun
Wagons draped in flags and slogans of victory
To Lemberg or Liège, to Kraków or Mons
The madness for victory died in the drumfire of Verdun
Trains became hospitals, and this time the train saw
The retreat of the defeated and—to taunt the warlords—
In the wagon in the Compiègne forest, the capitulation
Millions dead on the battlefields, senseless suffering
Those who returned found misery, poverty and unemployment
But on the bottom of the collapse already prospered
The smugglers and the war profiteers, the speculation
But it also sprouted from the confusion of entangled politics
