Schlafend in deinem kleinen Sitz funktest du zu den Sternen,
Und schlafend nach der Heimfahrt trug ich dich zurück ins Haus.

Du bist jetzt hinterm Steuer, und wir fliegen durch die Nacht
Vater und Sohn nochmal vereint in der dunklen Kabine,

Dschalalabad, Rangoon, Bangkok, Phnom Penh und Singapur.
Und wenn wir landen werden, heimgekehrt von unserer Reise,
Wirst du zu deinem kleinen Sohn nach Haus fahren und dann

I took you when you were little in this flying machine
Which I borrowed for us from a small airplane mechanic.
You quickly board your seat in the front right of the cabin,
And got on your knees on my map case.

You shouldn't miss a moment of our flight,
And only when you roll out after landing do you fall asleep peacefully.
Then you probably flew into infinite distances in a dream,
And steered your airship into the light of the sky blue.
Asleep in your little seat you radioed to the stars
And sleeping after driving home I carried you back into the house.
I'm sitting next to you in this big flying machine
You're behind the wheel now and we're flying through the night
Father and son reunited in the dark cabin,
The whole world in front of us, a hundred tons of cargo behind us.
In front of us on a small screen the names of cities shine,
Strung all longings on a string of pearls,
As they came night after night in my childhood dreams:
Jalalabad, Rangoon, Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Singapore.
