Zehn Minuten dauerte die große Autofahrt genau.
Dann stand ich auch schon gestrandet in einem biblischen Stau:
Eine Baustelle am Horizont, Vollsperrung, ich sah rot,
Ich fluchte, spielte am Radio und suchte mein Butterbrot.
Ich fand es verlockend knisternd im Handschuhfach, eine Pracht!
Diese Art von Butterbrot, die keiner so wie Ilse macht:
Noch das Brotpapier beschriftet mit .E"und «R"fürsorglich,
Dieses «E"heißt Emmentaler und das «R», es ist für mich.
Ich packte es aus, es duftete betörend
Noch die warme Backstube heraufbeschwörend.
Die knusprige Kruste splitterte, lustvoll biß ich hinein
Und mir fielen alle Butterbrote meines Lebens ein:
Diese Köstlichkeit, die meine Oma mir auf einem Brett
Mitleidig ins Zimmer schob .Tja, ohne Abendbrot ins Bett!"
Ein Radieschenbrot und eins mit Quark und Schnittlauch, welch ein Fest!
Und noch eins mit Rübensirup, ich liebte Stubenarrest!
Oder wenn mein Vater abends von der Arbeit wiederkam
Und aus seiner Aktentasche diese Alubüchse nahm,
Die ein roter Einweckgummi doppelt genommen umschloß,
Den er sorgfältig abstreifte, wie ich dieses Spiel genoß,
Wenn er den matt-silbrigen Deckel aufmachte
Und vom Brot, das er wieder nach Hause brachte,
Mir und meiner Schwester schweigend je eine Hälfte anbot.
Hab' nie was Besseres gegessen, als Vaters Hasenbrot.
Was war das für ein steinhartes und zugleich köstliches Brot,
Das man Mutter auf dem Schwarzmarkt für die alte.

Den Spruch hab ich früh gelernt, begriffen und mir wohl bewahrt:
Keinen Bissen soll ich kriegen oder ersticken daran,
Wenn ich jemals ein Stück Brot achtlos zu Boden werfen kann!
Ich hab bei Meistern gegessen, Sternezaubrern hinterm Herd,
Aber was ich über ihre Künste nie vergessen werd,
Ist das Brot, das warm und luftig aus der Meisterküche kam
Und den Abdruck meiner Zähne mit der dicken Butter nahm,
Ist das Tellerchen, das ich meiner Mutter bereitet hab,
Das dem Tellerchen so ähnlich war, das sie als Kind mir gab:
Brot zu Würfeln klein geschnitten ohne Rinde, das, wies scheint,
Alle Kinder kriegen, wenn’s das Leben gut mit ihnen meint —
Auch was mich angeht: Für meine letzte Reise
Begehr' ich keine königlichere Speise!
Hupen, Anlasser, Motoren, der Weg war nicht mehr verstellt,
Ich fuhr an und dachte: Ich hab alle Reichtümer der Welt!
Ich kann atmen, ich kann lieben, und ich leide keine Not.
Ich bin frei und hab in meinem Handschuhfach ein Butterbrot!
