Es war in dunkler Sturmesnacht so hat man uns gesagt
Blitze zuckten und erhellten jäh die finstre Nacht
Der Donner grollte um das Schloß, so sagte man uns frei
Und von dem Nordostturm erhob sich grausiges Geschrei
Kein Biest und auch kein Banshee wars, und auch kein böser Fluch
Gefangne nicht im Todeskampf, Dämon gebannt durch Spruch
Kein Geist der lauthals stöhnte, keine Seel in Angst und Bang
Es war der Gräfin Singen, denn sie übte nächtelang
Die Gräfin war fest überzeugt daß sie ein Barde sei
Und dadurch wurde Leben unter ihr zur Quälerei
Man mußte lauschen wenn sie sang und lächelnd ihr zuhörn
Und ihre goldne Stimme, jedes Vogels Traum, beschwörn
Die Gräfin war vermählt, sie meinte unter ihrem Stand
So kam es, daß ihr lieber Mann nicht einmal Frieden fand
Nicht nur daß er ertragen mußt ihr Singen jede Nacht
Still leidend ward für jedes Falsch verantwortlich gemacht
Es war in dunkler Sturmesnacht so hat man uns zitiert
Das muß der Grund gewesen sein daß nichts sich hat gerührt
Als plötzlich die Musik verklang… dann als der Tag anbrach
Die Diener fanden daß die Gräfin tot im Turme lag
Herolde kamen um zu sehn ob falsches Spiel geschah
Befragten alle gründlich was des Nachts ein jeder sah
Ganz überraschend kam ein Umstand schnell ans Tageslicht:
Für jeden Schritt des Grafen nachts verbürgte jemand sich
Die Schloßbewohner kamen von sich aus, allein, zu zwein
Zu schwören daß der Graf des Nachts nicht einmal war allein
Obwohl der Turm verschlossen war, die Tür mit Schlüsseln zwei
So war von jedem Tatverdacht der Graf eindeutig frei
Nach einer Weile rief man ihren Tod als Selbstmord aus
Und jeder in der Gegend zog Zufriedenheit daraus
Es war kein Urteil dem man besser widersprechen sollt
Doch fragt man sich warum sie ihre Laute essen wollt

It was on a dark, stormy night, we were told
Lightning flashed and suddenly lit up the dark night
The thunder rumbled around the castle, so we were told free
And from the north-east tower rose a horrible cry
It wasn't a beast or a banshee, and it wasn't an evil curse either
Not caught in death throes, demon banished by spell
No spirit moaning loudly, no soul in fear and anxiety
It was the Countess singing, because she practiced all night long
The countess was firmly convinced that she was a bard
And because of that, life among her became torture
You had to listen when she sang and listen to her with a smile
And summon her golden voice, every bird's dream
The Countess was married, she meant below her class
So it was that her dear husband did not even find peace
Not only that he has to endure her singing every night
Suffering in silence was blamed for every wrong
It was on a dark, stormy night, so we were quoted
That must have been the reason nothing moved
When suddenly the music died away… then as day broke
The servants found that the countess was dead in the tower
Heralds came to see if false play happened
Questioned everyone thoroughly what each saw of the night
Quite surprisingly, one fact quickly came to light:
For every step the Count took at night, someone vouched
The castle residents came of their own accord, alone, in pairs
To swear that the Count wasn't alone at night
Although the tower was locked, the door with keys two
So the Count was clearly free of any suspicion
After a while her death was declared a suicide
And everyone around drew satisfaction from it
It was not a judgment that should be contradicted
But one wonders why she wants to eat her lute
