У Михеля есть колодец, в колодце живёт Ундина.
Её расплетённые косы прекраснее лунного света…
Когда она вечерами поёт на краю колодца,
Её серебристый голос кинжалом пронзает сердце.
От счастья бледнеет Михель и ждёт поскорей заката.
И день для него длиннее, чем каторга для злодея!
Соседи твердят сурово: «За ум бы ты взялся, Михель!
Завёл бы себе хозяйство, нашёл бы себе хозяйку!»
Но Михель не отвечает, лишь курит под старой вишней.
Зачем ему дом с камином?
Зачем ему горы злата?
Зачем ему двор и титул?
Зачем ему трон и царство?
У Михеля есть колодец, в колодце живёт Ундина.
И если случайный путник попросит в ночи приюта,
Захлопнет ворота Михель и буркнет: «Ступай подальше!»
А если какая дева подарит ему улыбку,
Она не проснётся утром.
Ундина её задушит!
