Scotland Witch hieß ein Schiff vor achtzig Jahren
Machte Jagd auf den Wal, soviel ich weiß.
Ist der Vater meines Vaters drauf gefahren,
Doch die Scotland Witch liegt heute noch im Eis.
Mühsam komme ich weiter
Beim Entziffern der Schrift,
Langsam, Punkt für Punkt
Und Strich um Strich.
Aus dem Schwarz der Tinte,
Aus dem Dunkel, aus dem Nichts
Spricht zu mir die Mannschaft
Der Scotland Witch.
Die Worte auf den Blättern
Sind von wechselnder Hand
Die Feder war gewandert

Mag sein, er war der Letzte —
