Beautiful are the trees in their autumn
In the woods the paths are dry
A motionless sky is reflected in the water
When the October twilight comes;
Fifty-nine swans
They stand on the raging river among the stones
The nineteenth autumn has come to me
From the day I counted them;
Suddenly I saw them fly away
In big broken rings
And spinning to get lost away
On their sonorous wings
I have seen them, creatures of light
So now my heart is sad
Everything has changed since me
For the first time on this beach
I could hear the beating of their wings on my head like bells
Listening then I walked with a lighter step
They go tirelessly, lovers in pairs
Cold friendly currents follow
As they sail, they rise in the air;
Their hearts have not aged
Passion and conquest accompany them
Wherever they go wandering
But now they slide slowly on the water
Mysterious and beautiful;
Among which rushes they will make their nest
