Tabu Ley Rochereau , born November 13, 1940, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was a leading performer of African rumba and jazz. He led Международный оркестр Африки and pioneered the soukous genre, fusing Congolese folk music with Cuban and Latin American rumba. His oeuvre included hundreds of songs, and the Los Angeles Times dubbed him "African Elvis." After the fall of the Mobutu regime, he also became involved in political activism.
