He is best known as a founding member of iconic bands such as Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, and Erasure. Clarke played a pivotal role in shaping the early sound of Depeche Mode, writing eight of the eleven tracks on their debut album, "Speak & Spell", before leaving the group in 1982.
