Mortiis is a musical project formed by Håvard Ellefsen in 1993 in Oslo, Norway. After leaving the band Emperor due to creative differences, the 18-year-old musician moved to Sweden, where he began a solo career. His debut album, "Født Til å Herske" was recorded using synthesizers and was distinguished by its dark atmosphere and mystical lyrics. Mortiis became known as one of the pioneers of the industrial genre, combining electronic elements with a dark aesthetic.
