Ой, ты степь без конца и края
Все молчит, только ветров стая,
Гнет ковыль, и все умолкло в тишине
Я иду, ступая, по своей родной земле
Заколочены двери, ставни дома
Заболочены берега затона
Не кричит ни птица, не шумит ковыль
И лишь ветер носит черную пожара пыль
Путник обмер весь ни сказать, ни слова
Все порушено, нет родного дома
У крыльца ни сесть, ни воды напиться
Шутку с ним сыграла судьба — злая птица
Где искать теперь словно ветра в поле
Мать отца своих да кабы те на воле
Чашу горькую испить, знать такая доля
И безмолвствует душа и кричит от боли!
Приклонился он у родных останков
Слез сдержать не смог тихо так заплакал
Он хотел сказать, только в горле ком
Словно это был какой-то страшный сон
Поднял очи он, взглянул за горизонт
Ветер гнет ковыль о степи поет
Тихо встал, побрел, куда глаза глядят,
А над всей землей облака летят

I could not hold back my tears, I cried so quietly
He wanted to say, only in the throat
Like it was some kind of terrible dream
He raised his eyes, looked beyond the horizon
The wind bends the feather grass about the steppe sings
Quietly got up, wandered, where the eyes look,
And clouds fly over the whole earth
