| We had more fun when we were poor
| The old thrills can’t satisfy you anymore
| You’ve collected everything you could afford
| But you were much more fun when you were poor
| Remember the shabby house, remember the empty drive
| When you actually reeked of being alive
| Because the passion leaked out of your ass
| Residual ambitions from your bankrupt past
| We were better off hungry, sleeping on the floor
| You were so ambitious when desperate and
| Much more fun when you were poor
| Remember walking to the bar just to watch TV
| Ever aimlessly content just sitting right next to me
| Before some insatiable beast traded you her heart
| You converted people with your love, your joy, and your spark
| Now that you’ve foreclosed on the selfless times
| Your poetry, once a thing of substance, has fallen so sadly behind the cars,
| the boat, the clothes
| Your friends were replaced by new leather shoes
| And you may look dashing now but I remember when you were
| Beautiful |
