| I took the front door in
| But I had to take the back door out
| I took the front door in
| But I had to take that back door out
| I was sleeping very peacefully
| When all of a sudden, I heard a shout
| Now, I grabbed my clothes
| Didn’t even take time to dress
| I grabbed my hat, my coat, my shoes
| And my money of course
| I didn’t even take time to dress
| Yes, I was running so fast
| I didn’t even have time to rest
| I ran through the alley
| I cut across the lot
| I took a quick look behind me
| But then I heard the shot
| I kept runnin' to my house
| Put the lock on the door
| That woman had a husband
| I’m not going back there anymore
| I thought she was my woman
| But she was somebody else’s wife
| I took the front door in
| And I almost most my life
| I ran through the alley
| Cut across the lot
| Took a quick look behind me
| But then I heard the shotgun
| I kept runnin' to my house
| Put three or four locks on the door
| That woman had a husband, a big one too!
| I’m not going back there anymore
| I thought she was my woman
| But she was somebody else’s wife
| I took the front door in
| And I almost most my life |
