History has not been kind to the Estonian people
Through the ages we have been crushed by the weight of foreign power
We, a small nation, still stood up to the oppressors
Songs on the lips, love igniting hearts
After all, we are Linda's children, the strong race of the Kalevites
Vanemuise kandle-bearers, singing on we're story
The desire for freedom crackled like a fire in the fireplace
The spirit of resistance echoes outside in the midsummer roar of thunder
Even when blood, tears, sweat flowed
What dear, was definitely close to my heart:
We hid the songs in our stomachs, the flags under the mane
To release feelings at the right time
When the wind of change was in the air
We brought out the flags, anxiety in our stomachs
Together, we blew the coals on the fire
Hoping with all my heart that a miracle would happen, a miracle would happen!
In the middle of a long slave night
Deep down we knew:
This is our life's work
To become free so that we could!
Takes a long time
Once anyway
Once anyway
Once anyway
We will win!
He had had enough of pain, the thirst for freedom flowed in his blood
Young and old came together from all over Estonia, all the people were suddenly on their feet
Emotionally, passionately, spiritually, as one man, one body |
We danced, we fought, we breathed through dawn, day, eha!
We knew, standing under the singing arch, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand:
No empire is forever, change is in the power of coming together!
The blues and whites waved in the white of the hazy summer nights
We sang as a nation, we danced strong, we had a smile on our faces
So as our resistance grew
Hope for an independent Estonia flared up
A nation armed with songs and laughter
There were no tanks against us!
When the summer heat melts you
The exit was getting closer and closer
Don't give up saan'd until freedom is in our hands
We got strength from the power of the ancestors, their power!
In the middle of a long slave night
Deep down we knew:
This is our life's work
To become free so that we could!
Takes a long time
Once anyway
Once anyway
Once anyway
We will win!
(For once we'll win anyway!)
Although we experienced opposition, threefold, tenfold, hundredfold
Something historic, absolutely extraordinary was happening:
Together we sang at the top of our lungs in the choir
When survival is at stake, each of us is a soloist!
Today, the way of freedom echoes back from the pious hills |
But even now it cannot be suppressed. |
We song baggage
No one can steal. |
It is hidden in the heart
There is more to bequeath to future 'generations'. |
Therefore let us sing!
In the middle of a long slave night
Deep down we knew: (Really, we did!)
This is our life's work
To become free so that we could! |
(For free, yes for free!)
Take as long as it takes, (No matter how long,)
For once anyway, (We won't give up!)
Once anyway, (Once, yes once anyway)
For once anyway, (We win!)
We will win! |
(Wooooooooh!)
Once anyway
We will win! |
